Are You Able to Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Forged our Modern World

There are many candidates to claim the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.

According to a new book, though, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten sawyers working for three months,” writes the author. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber could be produced within a week.”

Thanks to this speedy automated cutter, that turned logs to planks with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device

The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component transformed its rotary motion to up-and-down motion to power the saw. Another component transformed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per cycle.

“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every downward motion while moving with each upward motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental components.”

Circular to Vertical

Design a machine which converts rotary movement into vertical motion. You have these components exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, which is a cylinder or housing through which one of the bars will fit perfectly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a base, so the components do not collapse.)
